Itâs important to understand that body image healing is a process that takes time. Itâs a journey where you will actively need to unlearn all the unrealistic standards youâve been told or sold throughout your life.
For this reason, having guidance and someone in your corner to support and encourage you through setbacks can make a meaningful difference. As a Licensed Eating Disorder & Intuitive Eating Nutritionist, I believe itâs absolutely possible to begin shifting your body image on your own. However, if youâve tried to work on your body image healing before and found yourself feeling stuck or struggling to make lasting progress, working with a nutritionist can provide the support and tools you need to move forward.
When you work with a nutritionist, youâll learn how to heal from the inside out, prioritize your needs and feelings over a number on the scale, and build a healthier, more compassionate relationship with both yourself and food. Most importantly, youâll have someone alongside you to celebrate your wins, help you navigate challenges, and recognize the progress youâre making – even when itâs difficult to see it yourself.

Essential Body Image Healing Tips
It wonât always be easy, but it will get better. When you feel like you want to throw in the towel, return to these tips to help you feel more confident and capable of continuing on your healing path.
Recognize when youâre being too harsh on yourself.
When you start to feel overly critical of your physical self, remember that you are more than a body. Youâre all the qualities that make you who you are, and for which you are loved. Ask yourself what triggered those hurtful thoughts, give yourself grace, and intentionally shift your energy.
Treat yourself as you would a friend.
You wouldn’t say harsh, horrible things to your best friend! Treat yourself with the exact same love, kindness, and respect.
Look beyond the filters.
Remember that the images you see on social media are often unrealistic and unsustainable. There is a whole lot of work, tweaking, and filtering that goes into those photos. Social media blurs reality.
Look at the person in the mirror.
Look at yourself as a whole. Donât fixate on specific body parts; instead, look at yourself with love and appreciate everything your body does for you. Look yourself in the eye, smile, and appreciate how far you’ve come.
Keep your supportive relationships close.
Nurture the healthy relationships in your life with people who genuinely care for your well-being. Whenever possible, reduce negative interactions with anyone who might trigger you.
Set your boundaries
Set firm boundaries with those who comment on your weight or body. Let them know they are speaking out of turn and that their comments are neither required nor appreciated. Many of my clients come to me and share that they often have someone in their life who is critical of them. This is why itâs so important to have boundaries.
Put yourself first
Donât try to please everyone; the person who needs pleasing 24/7 is you. Itâs okay to realize you won’t always please those around you, and that’s okay!
Start living in the now
Donât focus on how youâll look in the future or wait until your clothes fit a certain way to be happy. Focus on the present moment and the active steps you are taking to heal. Have the experiences NOW, not tomorrow.
The key to achieving true body image healing comes from a place of self-love and acceptance. It comes from knowing that you are worthy of everything you desire and celebrating the small wins every single day!
Body Image Healing Takes Time
Body image healing takes patience and a lot of self-compassion. Donât aim to be perfectly positive all the time. Instead, learn to respect your body and all it does for you, rather than focusing purely on aesthetics.
Body image healing is a conscious practice. Here are some practical steps you can take today:
- Appreciate function over form: Notice the strength with which your body carries you through life and all the incredible things it allows you to do.Â
- Practice self-compassion: Acknowledge your frustration on hard days, but give yourself the love and respect you deserve anyway.Â
- Reframe negative thoughts: Be aware of negative thoughts when they arise, take a moment to pause and reframe them, and then continue with your day.Â
There is no specific âend-goalâ to body image healing, but every day is an opportunity to change your relationship with your body.
Common Body Image Healing Myths
Body image healing is an internal and emotional journey, not an external one. It happens when you separate your self-worth from your physical appearance and replace shame with compassion.
Letâs bust a few common myths:
- âChanging your body will fix your body image.â If you donât put in the internal work, no physical changes will fix the internal struggle of not feeling like youâre âenough.â
- âBody positivity means loving the way you look 24/7.â Youâll have good and bad days. A bad body image day doesnât erase the incredible progress youâve made.Â
- âYou must be at a specific weight to be healthy.â Health cannot be determined by a single number or clothing size. Obsessing over your weight or restricting your diet causes harm to your mental health and is completely counterproductive to healing.Â
- âYour current body image is a permanent part of you.â You can absolutely change your core beliefs! Little by little, you can learn new, emotionally healthy ways of viewing yourself.Â
- âThe âideal bodyâ is an achievable goal.â Thereâs no such thing as the âideal body.â This is a myth sold to us by society to coerce us into buying products. Aim for a healthy body and an ideal mindset instead. Â
Body Image Healing is Not A One-Size-Fits-All Approach
Everyone has their own unique journey, traumas, and experiences. Itâs important to figure out where you personally stand so you can begin healing in a way that makes sense for you.
What works for you might not work for someone else. Thatâs why body image healing requires individualized care. A nutritionist can provide that care, guiding you through the necessary steps to start on a healthy, sustainable path.
Many women who struggle with body image concerns and disordered eating worry that working with a nutritionist will feel intimidating, triggering, or uncomfortable.
While body image healing often involves gently stepping outside of your comfort zone, a skilled nutritionist who specializes in disordered eating will help you feel supported, understood, and cared for throughout the process. Together, you’ll explore the experiences and beliefs that brought you here so you can begin building a more peaceful relationship with your body.
If we work together, I am committed to creating a safe, compassionate space for healing. I hold myself to a high standard of care so that every client I work with feels supported and empowered with the tools they need to heal their relationship with food, eating, and their body.
